Explore the Hunter River with the Maitland Regional Art Gallery

From July 11 to October 11, Upriver Downriver will transform every gallery space at Maitland Regional Art Gallery into a celebration of the Hunter’s people, places, and creative spirit.

The Hunter’s landscapes, waterways, and communities are taking centre stage as Upriver Downriver brings together more than 40 artists in one of the region’s largest contemporary art exhibitions.

The Hunter River has shaped one of the most important regions in Australia, and along its mighty length we have a community of artists connected geographically and creatively.

Building on the 2023 iteration of Upriver Downriver, this major exhibition celebrates the expansive range of art and ideas resonating throughout our region.

Join us as we wind our way from the Upper Hunter down through to Maitland, across many tributaries and into the Port of Newcastle. The artists selected for this exhibition reflect the diversity of practice in the region, and our entire Gallery hums with the creative energy of the Hunter.
