Port Stephens Council Koala Road Strike Project
The Port Stephens Drive Koala Road Strike Mitigation Project delivered in partnership with the NSW Koala Program, aims to reduce Koala fatalities along one of the worst Koala road strike locations in NSW. The project was completed in October, just in time for the 2023 Koala breeding season. The project included the installation of:
- Approximately 4km of Koala-proof fencing along both sides of Port Stephens Drive;
- 850m of retrofitted Koala-proof fencing to the existing Horizons Golf Course fence;
- 1 x 20m long box culvert fauna underpass;
- Koala grids (similar to cattle grids) across two road intersections; and,
- Koala connectivity structures (fence escape structures, refuge poles and culvert furniture)

Koala Landholder Partnership Program
Following September’s ‘Save the Koala Month’, Port Stephens Council has launched its Koala Landholder Partnership Program which aims to identify private landholders in the LGA with an interest in collaborating with Council on Koala projects. Projects may include planting of koala food and shelter trees, removing weeds and creating koala friendly backyards.
With a large portion of the Koala habitat in our LGA located on private lands, it is important that Council partners with our landholders to ensure positive outcomes for the Koala. The Koala Landholder Partnership Program requests interested landholders to register their details via an online form on Councils website or find us on Facebook.
The form will remain available on Council’s website for an extended period however, all valid registrations for the program received by 30 November will also go in the draw to win an overnight stay at the Koala Sanctuary. Terms and conditions apply.
