Staying cool and healthy at home in an El Niño summer

October 22, 2023 @ 4:00 pm 6:00 pm

Our guest presenter is Dr John Shiel from EnviroSustain, a consultancy for low carbon buildings and precincts.

Dr Shiel’s research areas include adapting buildings for climate change, improving comfort, as well as constructing zero carbon homes.

Dr Shiel’s presentation will offer practical information and recommend resources on:

  • installing cost-effective retrofits
  • updating appliances and using them more strategically
  • creating an efficient one-room Cool Retreat
  • simple behavioural adaptions to stay cool and survive heatwaves, especially on hot nights.

Renew is also excited to introduce local resident and climate action advocate, John L. Hayes, who has sustainably renovated several of his own homes and will provide an owner/DIY perspective on how you can do it too. With his wife Rosie, John has been involved in many local climate and environment groups for the last 20 years.

Come along and join the Q&A session for all your burning questions. You could win a free energy efficiency consultation with one of our experts!

We will conclude the afternoon with some refreshments and an opportunity to meet Renew members, friends and locals. You can purchase a Renew magazine – showcasing the latest technology for a sustainable future, or Sanctuary Magazine – Modern Green Homes, (cash sales).

Find out what the Hunter Region Branch has been up to this year and see what type of activities you may like to get involved in as we begin planning our program of events for 2024.

We’d love to meet you at The Hive on 22 October at 4pm!

If you can, please let us know you’re coming – RSVP below. You’re welcome to just rock up – but don’t forget to bring some biscuits or cakes to share!

Cost: Free
